Geocache Description:

Come join us and the regular volunteers at the Yorkshire in Bloom 2017 award winning York Cemetery for a morning of planting crocus bulbs in support of York Cemetery & Purple4Polio

As we reach the end of the year we'll be doing something a little different for our next CITO event, 5,000 purple crocuses are being planted on the front lawn to highlight the need to eradicate polio from the planet, the Lord Mayor of York and civic party will also be attending around 11.30

Why Purple4Polio? Purple dye is used on a child’s left finger to indicate they have been immunised against polio. The planting of these 5,000 purple crocuses will show people that there is a lot of good work happening in the world and the final push is on to eradicate this dreadful disease.

At about 12 noon we will stop for lunch, in or on the steps of the chapel. Bring a packed lunch, but there will be tea and homemade cake aplenty. It might be an idea to bring a bottle of water as it can be thirsty work.

What you need to know:

York Cemetery - Purple Planting CITO

Saturday 4th November 2017 10:00am - 12:00noon

Meet us and the Friends at the cemetery gatehouse, for introductions and brief H&S information. We will be the ones wearing bright orange. Come and introduce yourself if we haven't met before.

We recommend you wear sturdy footwear, as we will be working on uneven ground between gravestones. You can bring your own gardening gloves, but all tools and equipment will be provided (there are gardening gloves available if you forget or don’t have them).

Children are welcome, but must be supervised. No dogs are allowed in the cemetery, apart from registered assistance dogs. Please remember that this is a working cemetery and there will probably be people visiting graves.

If you are planning to come then please log a 'will attend' note so we can gauge numbers for the day. Our tasks on the day may change depending on the weather, we will update the listing and make announcements accordingly, so please keep an eye on the listing nearer the event time.
