Geocache Description:

On June 18, 1950, Cardinal Cerejeira celebrated the ceremony for the launching of the first stone of the Church, saying at the time that "this Church will be the presence of Rome in our Portugal." That phrase had, in fact, a raison d'être. This is because the Church would be consecrated to Saint Eugene, in praise of the name of Baptism of His Holiness Pope Pius XII (Eugénio Pacelli). At the same time, another temple was being built in Rome, also in honor of the pope's name, where there is a chapel, built by the Portuguese, Our Lady of Fatima. Thus, on June 2, 1951, this temple was dedicated to St. Eugene, the same day that in Rome was consecrated to the aforesaid Church to the same Saint.
