La motte féodale ou motte castrale est un ouvrage de défense médiéval ancien, composé d'un rehaussement important de terre rapportée de forme circulaire, la motte. Il existe plusieurs formes d'édification de ces ouvrages, souvent appelés à tort « motte féodale », il en existe dans toutes les régions d'Europe.
La plupart du temps le sommet était occupé par une forte palissade. Un fortin de bois y était aménagé avec une tour de guet analogue à un donjon. La motte est considérée comme un château fort primitif.
En Europe occidentale, au Xe siècle, l'armée carolingienne devient trop lourde pour répondre aux rapides raids vikings et sarrasins. La défense s'organise donc localement autour des mottes, rapides à construire, et qui utilisent des matériaux peu coûteux et disponibles partout. Progressivement se distingue ainsi une élite guerrière dont la motte castrale matérialise l'autorité. Le seigneur assure la protection d'un axe commercial ou économique (souvent un village) et la motte devient l'élément fort de l'organisation spatiale de l'an mil. Elle peut servir également de résidence seigneuriale et favorise la vie économique. L'émergence du pouvoir banal sur l'ensemble du territoire au début du XIe siècle est un élément supplémentaire favorisant la généralisation des mottes qui prolifèrent entre la fin du Xe siècle et le début du XIIIe siècle selon les régions.
