10. Dez. É o número natural par que se segue ao nove e precede o onze. É a base do sistema decimal, de longe o sistema de notação numérica mais comum, quer na forma oral, quer na forma escrita. A razão desta escolha prende-se, presume-se, com o facto de os humanos terem dez dedos nas mãos!
Os matemáticos têm muito a dizer sobre este número. É um número composto (tem mais de dois divisores naturais distintos) com 1, 2 e 5 como fatores próprios. É a soma dos primeiros quatro números naturais (1+2+3+4), e também a dos três primeiros números primos (2+3+5). É um número defetivo ou deficiente (a soma dos seus fatores próprios é inferior a si próprio), triangular (pode ser representado por um triângulo equilátero), tetraédrico (pode ser representado por um tetraedro), e, obviamente, decagonal. É ainda um número semiprimo ou biprimo (produto de dois números primos).
Em ciência, do 10 deriva o sistema decimal de unidades; na química, 10 é o número atómico do néon, um gás nobre e também o valor de pH de uma solução 103 vezes mais básica (ou alcalina) que a água destilada; em física, 10 (m/s2) é o valor aproximado da aceleração gravítica à superfície da Terra; 10 é a dureza do diamante, a substância natural mais dura, na escala de Mohs e 10 são também as dimensões do espaço-tempo numa das teorias das supercordas; em astronomia, NGC10 (objeto 10 do New General Catalogue) é uma galáxia espiral barrada situada na direção da constelação do Escultor e M10 (objeto 10 no catálogo Messier) é um aglomerado globular de estrelas na constelação de Ofiúco.
Em filosofia e na religião, o 10 é um número com elevada simbologia. Os pitagóricos consideravam-no um número perfeito, o mais sagrado dos números, uma vez que 10=1+2+3+4. No 10 está representada a existência, o divino, o princípio de tudo (1), a criação, a dualidade: divino e humano, o bem e o mal (2), a vida, os mundos físico, psíquico e espiritual (3) e os quatro elementos, terra, ar, fogo e água (4). O número 10 era representado através de um triângulo formado por dez pontos, o Tetraktys. Na primeira linha há um único ponto, na segunda linha, dois pontos, na terceira linha, três pontos, e na quarta linha, quatro pontos (10=1+2+3+4).
Dez são os mandamentos, pedra angular no cristianismo e no judaísmo; 10 foram as pragas infligidas ao Egito e dez são as tribos perdidas de Israel (além das tribos de Judá e Benjamim). Ainda, de acordo com a bíblia, há 10 gerações entre Adão e Noé e outras 10 gerações entre Noé e Abraão. Os judeus observam dez dias anuais de redenção, começando no Rosh Hashaná e terminando no Yom Kippur, e no hinduísmo, o Senhor Vishnu apareceu na Terra em 10 encarnações.
Mais alguns 10: dez patas tem o caranguejo, dez segundos de contagem determinam a vitória por KO no boxe, há dez vogais no alfabeto coreano e dez é o número de porta mais famoso do mundo (10 Downing Street). 10 é ainda nome de rua, de filme, de série televisiva, de canal de televisão, de grupo musical, de álbum, de sistema operativo, … e nome de cache!
Qualquer um de nós já passou por vários 10. Afinal, como diria o saudoso Vasco Santana: “Dezes há muitos, seu palerma!” Compete a cada um de nós dar-lhes a importância que entender. Ao lançar esta cache, pretendemos marcar simbolicamente um 10 que está a passar por nós: 10 anos de geocaching! Foram muitos os momentos de convívio e de camaradagem. Novas amizades foram firmadas, mas também houve alguns momentos de desilusão e de frustrações. Foram muitas as aventuras vividas e novos locais e paisagens foram descobertos. Enfim, ao longo destes 10 anos, novos desafios e emoções foram experienciados. Este é o nosso pequeno tributo a todos aqueles que contribuíram para estes desafios e emoções.

10. Ten. Ten is an even natural number following nine and preceding eleven. Ten is the base of the decimal numeral system, by far the most common system of denoting numbers in both spoken and written language. The reason for the choice of ten is assumed to be that humans have ten fingers!
Mathematicians have a lot to say about this number. It is a composite number (it has more than two distinct natural divisors) being 1, 2 and 5 its proper factors. It is the sum of the first four natural numbers (1+2+3+4), and also of the first three prime numbers (2+3 +5). It is a defective or deficient number (the sum of its proper factors is less than the number itself), a triangular number (can be represented by an equilateral triangle), a tetrahedral number (can be represented by a tetrahedron), and, of course, a decagonal number. It is still a semiprime or biprime number (the product of two prime numbers).
In science, the decimal system of units is based on the number 10; In chemistry, 10 is the atomic number of neon, a noble gas and 10 is also the pH of a solution 103 times more basic (or alkaline) than distilled water; In physics, 10 (m/s2) is the approximate value of gravitational acceleration at the Earth's surface; 10 is the hardness of the diamond, the hardest natural substance, on the Mohs scale, and 10 are also the dimensions of space-time in one of the superstring theories; In astronomy, NGC10 (object 10 of the New General Catalog) is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor and M10 (object 10 in the Messier Catalog) is a globular cluster of stars in the constellation Ophiuchus.
In philosophy and religion, 10 is a number of high symbology. The Pythagoreans considered it a perfect number, the most sacred of numbers, as 10=1+2+3+4. The 10 represented the existence, the divine, the principle of everything (1), creation, duality: divine and human, good and evil (2), life, the physical, psychic and spiritual worlds (3) and the four elements, earth, air, fire and water (4). The number 10 was represented by a triangle formed by ten points, called Tetraktys. In the first line there is a single point, in the second line, two points, in the third line, three points, and in the fourth line, four points (10=1+2+3+4).
Ten are the commandments of Exudus, considered the cornerstone of Christianity and Judaism; 10 plagues were inflicted on Egypt, and ten were the lost tribes of Israel (those other than Judah and Benjamin). Yet, according to the Bible, there were 10 generations between Adam and Noah and 10 generations between Noah and Abraham. We have all gone through several 10’s. After all, as Vasco Santana (one of the most renowned Portuguese actors) would say: “10’s are many, you fool!". Each one of us gives them the importance that we want. By placing this cache, we intend to give significance to a 10 that is passing us by: 10 years of geocaching! There were several moments of conviviality and companionship and new friendships were made, but there were also moments of disappointment and frustration. Many adventures have been experienced and new places and landscapes were discovered. Well, new challenges and emotions have been experienced. This is our small tribute to all those who have made their contribution to those challenges and emotions.
