This is a virtual geocache, there is no container and logbook. To be able to log this cache follow the directions listed below.
On the border between Norway and Sweden, over the Fjord of Ringdal, one will find the most picturesque border crossing in the Nordic region. The bridges of Svinesund is comprised of the Old Svinesundbridge and the New Svinesundbridge that E6 passes over today. On the Swedish side of the border you will find the municipality of Strömstad located in the county of Västra Götaland and on the Norwegian side of the border you will find the municipality of Halden, located in the County of Østfold.
Construction of the Old Svinesundbridge was started in 1939 and it was supposed to replace the ferry that crossed the fjord. The construction was a corporation between Sweden and Norway where Swede was responsible for 90% of the cost, the granite and the manpower. The bridge was completed in 1946 and was officially inaugurated on June 15 1946. Present at the inauguration were the Norwegian King Haakon VII and the Swedish Crown prince Gustav Adolf.
As the years passed the traffic passing over the border increased and by the end of the last century it was decided to build a new 4-lane motorway and a larger bridge. In 2002 an agreement on a new Svinesund infrastructure was signed by the transportministeries of both countries. The decision resulted in the inauguration of a new bridge in 2005 and a new E6 crossing the border between Norway and Sweden. The official inauguration was on June 10 2005 by King Harald V of Norway and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Normal traffic over the new Svinesundbridge started two days later, on June 12. Today approximately 16000 vehicles passes over this border crossing every day.
The old bridge has a total length of 420 meters and the longest span is 155 meters. The highest elevation above the fjord is 65 meters. Norway and Sweden joined for the first time in protecting a cultural heritage on June 15 2005 and the bridge is now officially protected as a cultural heritage.
The new bridge has a total length of 704 meters, the longest span is 247 meters. The highest elevation above the fjord is 92 meters with a free height of 55 meters. The bridge has been designed to last for at least 120 years.
In order to log this cache you need to :
1. Find the given point where the boarder is indicated.
2. Take a picture of yourself (voluntary) and your GPS together with the borderline demarcated on the old bridge (see picture)
3. Enjoy the view.
4. Submit the logg with the picture enclosed.

På svensk side ligger Strömstad kommune i Västre Götalands Län og på norsk side finner man Halden kommune i Østfold fylke.
Gamle Svinesundsbroen ble påbegynt i 1939 og skulle erstatte fergen som krysset fjorden. Dette ble et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom Norge og Sverige der svenskene sto for ca 90% av kostnadene, all granitt og arbeidskraft. Broa sto ferdig i 1946 og ble offisielt åpnet 15 juni 1946 av Norges Kong Haakon VII og den svenske kronprinsen Gustav Adolf.
Etterhvert som årene gikk økte også trafikken over grensen og mot slutten av forrige århundre ble beslutningen om å bygge ny 4-felts motorvei og større bro, fattet. I 2002 ble overenskommelsen om ny Svinesundsforbindelsen undertegnet av de to landes samferdselsministere. Beslutningen resulterte til at den i juni 2005 kunne det igjen åpnes en ny bro og ny E-6 over grensen mellom Norge og Sverige. Den offisielle åpningen var 10.juni 2005 av Norges Kong Harald V og Sveriges Kung Carl XVI Gustaf. Regulær trafikk over den nye Svinesundsbrua åpnet to dager senere 12. juni. Idag passerer ca 16000 kjøretøy i døgnet grenseovergangen mellom de to landene.
Den gamle broas totale lengde er 420 meter, og lengste spenn er 155 meter. Største høyde over fjorden er 65 meter. Norge og Sverige gikk sammen for første gang om å frede et felles kulturminne og 15 juni 2005 ble broen fredet.
