Geocache Description:

Potatoes

What is a potato? According to Wikipedia, it is "a starchy, tuberous crop" from the nightshade family. Humans have cultivated this edible tuber for at least 7000 years. Originating in South America, specifically in the Andes mountains, potato species reached Europe in the late 1500s by the Spanish. It has since become a staple crop for much of the world and the 4th-largest food crop in the world.

A King Edward potato.

After millennia of selective breeding, there are now over 1000 different types of potatoes grown and harvested worldwide.

Potatoes have particular importance to Sweden, and especially the area around Mjölby. Situated in the fertile plains of Östergötland, Mjölby has long focused on the production of food and other life-essentials. Both the surrounding countryside as well as many industries in the town itself focus on producing food.

The Roundabout Potato

The Potato Roundabout in Mjölby is a much-discussed roadside attraction. It was erected in 2011 with the approval of the country government of Östergötland. A large replica of a King Edward potato, the roundabout is visible from the E4 and is possibly the thing most visitors and passers-by know about the town. The potato has been listed as one of the worst roundabout decorations in Sweden.

A bit of Christmas decorations.
