Lahden (Lahtelaisittain Lahen) radiomastot täyttivät marraskuun 2017 lopussa 90 vuotta.
Mastojen urakka alkoi 14. syyskuuta 1927 pystyttämällä ensimmäinen apumasto, jonka avulla varsinaisia mastoristikoita alettiin nostaa kohti taivasta. Mastojen pystytystyötä Lahden Selänmäelle tulivat valvomaan saksalaiset Frans Trojan ja Paul Nicolai.
Työmaa kiinnosti laajalti, tosin osa innokkaista kääntyi jo aseman porteilta takaisin kuultuaan töitä tehtävän 150 metrin korkeuteen. Lahden radiomastot rakennettiin kolmen kuukauden aikana. Ne olivat aikanaan kaksi korkeinta rakennelmaa Suomessa. Mastot valmistuivat virallisesti 26.11.1927. Siitä lähtien ne ovat kuuluneet Lahden kaupungin silhuettiin. Radioaseman viralliset vihkiäiset olivat huhtikuussa 1928.
Antenneihin tarvitut aikanaan 120 tonnin painoiset teräselementit ja lähetinkoneisto tilattiin Saksasta. Ne tuotiin Suomeen laivalla ja Lahteen ne saapuivat rautateitse. Viimeinen matka Selänmäelle eli nykyiselle Radiomäelle, tapahtui suurimmaksi osaksi hevospelillä, sillä tuon ajan kuorma-autot eivät jaksaneet viedä mastoelementtejä mäkeä ylös.
Vuonna 1935 valmistui Lahteen uusi suurasema, johon tuli tehokas 150 kW:n Marconi-lähetin. Vuonna 1953 yleisradiotoiminnassa otettiin käyttöön ula- eli FM-aallot ja -lähettimet. Samana vuonna uusittiin Lahden AM eli pitkäaaltoaseman lähetin. Lahden AM-asema hiljeni lopullisesti toukokuussa 1993, jolloin Yleisradion pitkäaaltolähetykset lopetettiin.
Suuraseman lopetettua radiomastoja on aika ajoin uhannut purkutuomio. Museovirasto on julistanut mastot ja suuraseman suojelukohteeksi, ja rakennukset ovat jo 90 vuoden ajan olleet Lahden kaupunkimiljöön kauas näkyvä tunnus. Mastot on usein pimeänaikaan valaistu.

Logataksesi tämän kätkön ota kuva itsestäsi ja/tai gepsistäsi niin, että Lahden radiomastoista ainakin osa näkyy kuvassa. Kasvojasi ei tarvitse näkyä. Ilman kuvaa logatut "löydöt" tullaan poistamaan. Huomioithan, että kuvanottopaikkoja (Location Lx) on useita. Löytääksesi tämän kätkön voit ottaa kuvan mistä tahansa annetuista paikosta (myös kätkön naateista), ei siis tarvitse käydä niissä kaikissa. Odotan mielenkiintoisia kuvakulmia ;o)

Lahti Radio Towers
Lahti Radio Towers had 90 year birthday end of November 2017. Building of the towers started 14th September 1927. Germans Frans Trojan and Paul Nicolai came to supervise the construction.
Many people were interested about the construction but turned away from the gates when they heard that building job was in 150 meters. It took three months to built the towers. They were two of the most tallest structures in Finland at that time. The official opening of the radiostation was in April 1928.
The steel elements for the antennas and the transmitter were ordered from Germany. They were brought to Finland by boat and to Lahti by train. The last leg of the journey up the hill was made by horses because the trucks at that time were unable to carry that much weight.
Year 1935 new station was finished and it had powerful Marconi transmitter. 1953 Finnish Public broadcasting company (YLE) started to use VHF radio waves and got new transmitter. Yle stopped their broadcasting from Lahti 1993 and the towers fell in to the silence.
From time to time the Towers have been under demolition thread. The Finnish Heritage Agency has taken the towers under its proctection and the Radio Towers are well known landmark and big part of the citys skyline. The towers are often illuminated during fall and winter.

To log this cache take a picture of you or your gps so that at least little bit of the radio towers is seen in the picture. Your face does not need to be shown in the image. Logs without picture will be removed. Notice that there is more than one location to take pictures. You can take the pic from any of the locations. One picture is enough.
