Located at the heart of they city, the site of Gloucester Cathedral has been a place of Christian worship since the 7th Century when it was originally founded as an Abbey by Osric, an Anglo Saxon prince. The building as it is found today can trace its origins back to 1089 when Abbot Serlo began construction. This period of construction is still apparent today, with the large supporting pillars and Norman arches clearly visible throughout the structure.
Work to expand the Abbey was carried out in the 13th Century, when a first Lady Chapel and new tower were built; the 14th Century, when the east end was significantly remodelled; and in the 15th Century, when the west end was remodelled and the south porch, current tower and Lady Chapel were added.
When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in the 16th Century, the Abbey was refounded as a Cathedral. This was in no small part due to the royal link as the Abbey had been the site of the coronation of King Henry III and the resting place of Henry VIII's direct ancester, King Edward II, whose tomb can still be found in the North-West Ambulatory.
The Cathedral has been extensively cleaned and restored over the latter part of the 20th Century and the early part of the 21st. A popular destination for visitors to the city, guided tours are available for a small fee and visitors can also join tours of the Crypts, where the original Norman foundations can be observed, and the Tower, where those who brave the 269 steps on a clear day are afforded views right across Gloucester and the surrounding countryside.
How to log this Geocache
The Cathedral offers so many interesting features that it is a truly difficult task to find just one to draw your attention to. So we're asking you to draw our attention to something that you find interesting instead!
Please note there is a suggested donation of £5 per person towards entry to the Cathedral.
We don't want the cost of admission to be an obstacle to claiming this find so photographs for meeting the logging requirement can be taken inside or outside.
Logs must relate to visits made after the date of publication of this geocache.
To claim your find:
- Upload an photo to your found log of something that particularly caught your attention on the day that you visited. This could be a tomb, a plaque, a gargoyle or just some of the stonework. You do not need to send this to the CO, please make sure it is attached to your log.
- Include something in your photo that makes the photo unique to you. You don't have to appear in the photo yourself but include your phone, GPS or a thumb to prove that you didn't log this from your armchair at home. Please note that each log must have a unique photo and the same photo cannot be used by different geocaching accounts.
- Feel free to post as many photos from the Cathedral as you want. However, if you post multiple photos, please mark the one that you are submitting to meet the logging requirements in a way that makes it obvious. Adding "[Logging Requirement]" to the description would be helpful.

Im Herzen der Stadt Gloucester befindet sich die Gloucester Kathedrale ein Ort welcher seit dem 7. Jahrhundert dazu dient dem christlichen Glauben zu huldigen. Ursprünglich wurde diese heutige Kathedrale als eine Abtei vom Angelsächsischen Prinz Osric gegründet. Die Ursprünge des Gebäudes können bis zum Jahre 1089 zurückverfolgt werden als es von Abbot Serlo erbaut wurde. Spuren dieser frühen baulichen Periode sind heute immer noch sichtbar mit den verteilten Bögen und Säulen innerhalb des Gebäudes.
Die Abtei wurde im Laufe der Jahre häufig aus- oder auch umgebaut, so wurden bereits im 13. Jahrhundert ein Turm und eine Marienkapelle hinzugefügt. Später im 14. Jahrhundert wurde das komplette Ostende des Komplexes umgebaut, ein Jahrhundert später folgte das Westende. Außerdem wurden während der Bauarbeiten im 15. Jahrhundert die südliche Veranda, der heutige Turm und die Marienkapelle hinzugefügt.
Im 16 Jahrhundert zurzeit Heinrich den VIII wurden die Klöster aufgelöst und die Abtei wurde als Kathedrale neugegründet. Dies war zu großenteilen nur durch den engen Bezug mit der Königlichen Familie möglich, da nicht nur König Heinrich der III in der Abtei gekrönt wurde sondern auch die Letzte Ruhestätte von König Edward den II ist einem direkten Vorfahren von Heinrich den VIII. Dieses Grab kann auch heute noch in den Nord-West Arkaden bestaunt werden.
Im späten 20. Jahrhundert und im frühen 21. Jahrhundert wurde die Kathedrale sorgfältig gereinigt und restauriert. Heutzutage ist die Kathedrale ein beliebtes Ziel für jeden Besucher der Stadt Gloucester und es sind, für einen kleinen Preis, ganzjährig geführte Touren möglich. Bei einer solchen Tour ist es möglich die Krypta zu besuchen, wo das Ursprünglich Normannische Fundament gesehen werden kann oder auch die Türme mit ihren 269 Stufen können erklungen werden, von all jenen die nicht nur mutig genug sind sondern auch eine schöne Aussicht über Gloucester haben wollen.
Kurzanleitung zum loggen des Geocaches
Die Kathedrale bietet so viele verschiedenen Sehenswürdigkeiten das es wirklich schwer ist genau diejenige zu finden die dir am besten gefällt. Deshalb fordern wir dich dazu auf uns den Ort zu zeigen den du für am interessantesten hältst!
Bitte beachte es gibt eine vorgeschlagene Spende von £5 pro Person für den Eintritt in die Kathedrale.
Wir wollen nicht, dass die Kosten für den Eintritt ein Hindernis den Anspruch für dieser finden, damit Fotos für die Erfüllung der Logging-Anforderung innerhalb oder außerhalb getroffen werden können.
Ihr Log muss sich auf einen Besuch beziehen, der nach der Veröffentlichung des Geocache gemacht wurde.
Um den Fund zu bestätigen:
- Lade ein Bild zu deinem Fund log hoch von etwas das dein Interesse gefunden hat, während deines Besuches. Das könnte z.B. ein Grab, ein Gargoyle oder auch nur ein besonders schönes Stück Steinmetzkunst sein. Sie müssen dies nicht an das CO senden, bitte stellen Sie sicher, dass es an Ihrem Protokoll angehängt ist.
- Das Bild sollte etwas beinhalten so, dass es einzigartig für dich ist. Du selbst musst auf dem Bild nicht mit auftauchen aber zu sehen sein sollte dann doch dein: Smartphone, GPS-Gerät oder zumindest dein Daumen nach oben sein, als Beweis dafür das es auch von dir gefunden wurde. Bitte beachte, dass jeder Log ein einzigartiges Foto haben muss und dass dasselbe Foto nicht von verschiedenen Geocachern verwendet werden darf.
- Es steht dir frei so viele Fotos zu machen wie du möchtest aber bitte markiere/benenne das Foto welches über die Erfüllungskriterien verfügt auf eine Weise welches es eindeutig macht. Du könntest z.B. ein Einfaches "[Logging Requirement]“ als Überschrift für das entsprechende Foto verwenden.
