Im Volksmund auch Hünenburg oder Hüneborg genannt, entstand dieses Ehrenmal auf der Hünenborg in den Jahren 1926-1927 nach einem Entwurf des in Rheine gebürtigen Künstlers Carl Murdfield (1868-1944).
Es erinnert stark an das in der Jungsteinzeit errichtete berühmten Stonehenge bei Amesbury in England.
Zum Gedenken der im ersten Weltkrieg gefallenen Soldaten wurden die Kriegsschauplätze und Namen der Gefallenen in runenartiger Schrift eingemeißelt.
Als Baustoff wurden Ibbenbürener und Baumberger Sandstein verwendet.
Man weiss nicht viel über die Hünenborg, aber der Legende nach soll hier im 5. Jahrhundert eine Burg gestanden haben, die während der Christianisierung des Münsterlandes zerschlagen wurde.
Fragmente oder Grundmauern dieser Burg wurden indes nie gefunden.

Vernacular named Huenenburg or Hueneborg, this memorial was build on the hill Huenenborg in the years 1926-1927 designed by Rheine native-born artist Carl Murdfield (1868-1944).
It is remindful of Stonehenge in Amesbury/Great Britain .
Commemoration of the dead soldiers of the worldwar 1 the theatres of war and the names of the soldiers were engraved in runic writing.
The building material is Ibbenbuerener and Baumberger sandstone.
We don't know much about the Huenenborg, but the legend says, that in the 5th century a castle was upright, which was destroyed while Christianization from the Muensterland.
Ruins or foundation walls were never located.
