La centrale Frontenac fut la première centrale électrique permanente sur la rivière Magog à Sherbrooke. Les premiers travaux de construction remontent aux années 1888-1889. À cette époque, la Sherbrooke Gas & Water Company était responsable de cette initiative. Au fil des années, plusieurs modifications, dont certaines majeures, se sont greffées aux installations existantes. Ce n'est qu'en 1917, lors du remplacement complet des équipements et du rehaussement du barrage, que le site Frontenac connaîtra sa configuration actuelle. Elle est située juste en aval du pont Hubert-C.-Cabana (rue Belvédère Nord). En 1970, Hydro-Sherbrooke procéda à l'automatisation de la centrale. En 1987, des rénovations majeures ont été effectuées; les turbines ont été remplacées et les alternateurs ont été rebobinés, faisant croître sa capacité de 1 700 kW à 2 200 kW (30 % d'augmentation). Inaugurée à nouveau, le 7 juin 1988, à l'occasion des fêtes du Centenaire de l'électricité sherbrookoise, cette centrale est ouverte aux visiteurs pendant la saison estivale. C'est le plus ancien site hydroélectrique encore en exploitation dans tout le Québec.

At that time, the Sherbrooke Gas & Water Company was responsible for this initiative. Over the years, a number of changes, some of them major, have been added to existing facilities. It was not until 1917, when the equipment was completely replaced and the dam was raised, that the Frontenac site would have its current configuration. It is located just downstream of the Hubert-C.-Cabana Bridge (Belvédère North Street). In 1970, Hydro-Sherbrooke proceeded to the automation of the plant. In 1987, major renovations were made; the turbines were replaced and the generators were rewound, increasing its capacity from 1,700 kW to 2,200 kW (30% increase). Inaugurated again on June 7, 1988, on the occasion of the celebrations of the Centenary of Sherbrooke Electricity, this station is open to visitors during the summer season. It is the oldest hydroelectric site still in operation throughout Quebec.
