La maggior parte delle persone, dei turisti e dei fiorentini passano indifferenti senza conoscerne il significato, ma la storia ci riporta alla notte del 27 Gennaio 1601; in quella notte un terribile temporale imperversava su Firenze e uno dei tanti fulmini colpì violentemente la parte più alta del Duomo: La grande sfera dorata sormontata dalla croce, che fin dal 1472 anno della sua installazione, era diventata il simbolo lucente e brillante della Cattedrale e della Città.
La scarica elettrica fu così potente da staccare la palla dalla sede che cadendo danneggiò parte del tamburo e della cupola schiantandosi nella piazza sottostante con un enorme frastuono.
Nel punto esatto dell'impatto venne posta una lastra circolare di marmo a perenne ricordo del fatidico evento.
La Sfera, progettata e creata da Andrea del Verrocchio è realizzata in rame dorato, ha un diametro di 2,3 metri un peso di 2000 Kg e si trova a circa 116 metri dal suolo. Il successivo restauro, eseguito dall'architetto Bernardo Buontalenti, è durato oltre un anno e nell'autunno del 1602 la sfera con la croce è stata posta nuovamente sulla cupola e da allora risplende sulla Città in tutta la sua bellezza.

Most people, tourists and Florentines alike pass the marker without so much as noticing it or wondering what it means, but the story takes us back to the night of January 27, 1601, when a terrible thunderstorm raged over Florence. Lighting struck the highest point of the Duomo: the large gilded ball with a cross on top that had been the shining symbol of the Cathedral and City since 1472.
The impact was so powerful that the ball got detached, rolled down the cupola and hit the square below with an enormous blow.
On that exact spot, a circular marker was placed to remember the event of that fateful night.
The ball, designed and created by Andrea del Verrocchio, is made of gilded copper and has a diameter of 2 meters and 30 centimeters, (90.55 inch) weights almost 2000 Kg (4400 lb) and is about 116 meters (380 ft) from the ground. The restoration carried out by the architect Bernardo Buontalenti, took over a year and in the autumn of 1602 the ball with its cross in all its beauty was placed on top of the cupola again.
