Geocache Description:

At the end of 2014, Dundee became the first UNESCO City of Design in the UK joining places like Turin, Bilbao, Montreal, Beijing and Kobe. The title recognised the design innovations that Dundee has given the world for many years.

Since the 19th century Dundee has brought many design innovations to the world, including jute and textile manufacturing, modern town planning, aspirin, biomedical research that has led to hundreds of new cancer drugs, comics including The Beano and The Dandy, orange marmalade, the ATM machine as well as video games classics such as Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto

There are numerous design initiatives aimed at creating the next generation of designers across all disciplines and keeping highly talented graduates in Dundee, creating new ideas and new companies. From simple initiatives like the numerous doors and bins which have been painted by local artists, temporary trails of statues (Oor Wullie in 2016 and Penguins in 2018) and public art to leading jewellers and fashion designers as well as a continued presence in innovations in software and video games. The jeweller in the Team Clova family has asked it to be mentioned that the original 3Js that Dundee was most famous for (Jute, Jam and Journalism) now in certain circles includes the 4th J for Jewellery ;)

It is therefore fitting that Dundee was chosen for Scotland's first design museum!

Dundee's latest design innovation is the £1 billion, 30 year masterplan rebuilding the waterfront to design an open, inclusive city of the future.  At the heart of the waterfront plan is the creation of this virtual cache at the V&A Museum of Design Dundee, a global home for Scotland’s design heritage. (OK maybe not the actual virtual but definitely the location we have chosen for it..)The building was designed by renowned Japanese Architect Kengo Kuma. It juts out onto a cofferdam over of the Tay and has taken 3 years to build If you look carefully, you will see that there are no straight walls on the outside, they are all curved. We have watched every phase of its construction with growing excitement. From what looked liked stadium seating in the very beginning of the project, through the Star Wars Sandcrawlers phase (it really did look like a couple of Sandcrawlers... ) onto the finished building with the rough stone cladding on the outside to create a sense of Scottish cliffs.

To log this virtual please go to the coordinates and take a selfie doing a thumbs up, including the V&A sign in your picture and attach it to your log. If you are shy and don't want to show your face, just attach a photo with your thumb and the sign. We love all photos so kids, caching crew or family or friends doing the thumbs up are acceptable too. We also REALLY love dogs so if your dog wants to be in the photo we'll give you extra brownie points ;)
