Geocache Description:

The Káli basin with the surrounding basalt volcanoes is in my opinion the most beautiful landscape in Hungary. At the foot of the hills around the basin there are small villages with nice old houses, the hillsides are covered by vineyards and almond trees and lake Balaton is just a few kilometers from here. For 50 years I've spent a few weeks or at least a few days here each year.

The whole basin is protected as a part of the Balaton Uplands National Park. Please, don't leave the surfaced roads by car or motorcycle! You can park your car safely in Köveskál.

In and around the basin there are a lot of geological curiosities but the most striking are the cone and truncated cone shape basalt volcanoes. It's easy to recognize the Hegyestű at the nordeast side of the basin with its half cone shape (the other half was mined) and at the opposite, southwest side the Tóti hill and behind it the Gulács, two very similar and regular cone shape hills.

The co-ordinates given above lead you to a silent part of the basin, with nice view around. To log this cache you have to walk a bit further: please, find a place in the basin from where Gulács is almost exactly hidden by Tóti-hill, make and upload a photo of the hill(s) and give the co-ordinates of this place in your log. (For identifying the hills see the figure above.)

The villages in the basin are Kővágóörs, Köveskál, Szentbékálla, Mindszentkálla, Kékkút and Salföld but Balatonhenye and Monoszló (on the North) as well as Ábrahámhegy (at lake Balaton) belong to this region, too. The best way to visit them is cycling but there are some footpaths crossing the basin, too. If you want to have a look on the basin from above you can climbe one of the hills around it. I'd advise my traditional cache Toti hill from where you can enjoy a 360 degree panorama.
