De boom die alles zag
Op 4 oktober 1992 om zes minuten over half zeven ’s avonds boorde een vrachtvliegtuig van El Al zich vlak na vertrek in de flats Groeneveen en Kruitberg in de Bijlmer.
Aan boord bevonden zich 3 bemanningsleden en 1 passagier. In totaal verloren 43 mensen hun leven en er waren tientallen gewonden.
Snel na de ramp richtten de overlevenden, bewoners en nabestaanden een herdenkingsplaats in rondom "de boom die alles zag", een stille getuige op de rampplek die de crash en de brand had overleefd. Rondom deze boom werden waxinelichtjes en foto’s geplaatst.
In opdracht van het Stadsdeel Amsterdam Zuidoost werd er door architecten Herman Hertzberger en Georges Descombes een monument gemaakt waarvan behalve “de boom die alles zag” ook de ruimte in de directe omgeving van de boom deel uitmaakt: Het Groeiend Monument.
“De boom die alles zag” is omlijst door een muur waarin herdenkingsteksten en herinneringen een plaats hebben, terwijl de boom is omringd door een veelkleurig mozaïektapijt gemaakt van stoeptegels met een mozaïek erin. Een initiatief van Akelei Hertzberger en gemaakt door bijna 2000 mensen, waaronder nabestaanden, buurtbewoners en hulpverleners.
Een promenade verbindt de plek rond “de boom die alles zag” met de plaats van het vernielde gebouw. De bomen langs de promenade zijn gedoneerd door de stad Amsterdam en stonden oorspronkelijk op het Museumplein. De plattegrondafdruk laat de omtrek van het verdwenen gebouw zien, met een kleine fontein op het inslagpunt van het vliegtuig.
Jaarlijks vindt bij "de boom die alles zag" een herdenking van de slachtoffers plaats. Tijdens de herdenking is er geen vliegverkeer boven de Bijlmer.

The tree that saw everything
Early on the evening of October 4, 1992, an El Al cargo plane, shortly after takeoff, crashed into the flat buildings Groeneveen and Kruitberg in the Bijlmer.
On board there were 3 crewmembers and 1 passenger. A total of 43 people lost their life and dozens were injured.
Shortly after the crash the survivors, residents and relatives of the victims made a place of commemoration around 'the tree that saw everything', a silent witness that survived the crash and the fire. People placed candles and photographs near the tree.
Architects Herman Hertzberger and Georges Descombes created a monument which, in addition to "the tree that saw everything", also includes the surrounding environment: The Growing Monument
Around “The tree that saw everything” is a wall bearing commemorative texts and memories the tree itself is surrounded by the Carpet of Mosaics made of pavement tiles , with each tile containing a small inlaid mosaic. An initiative of Akelei Hertzberger and made by almost 2000 people, including relatives, local residents and social workers.
A promenade connects the spot around "the tree that saw everything" with the location of the destroyed building. The trees along the promenade were donated by the city of Amsterdam and were originally standing on the Museumplein. The map print shows the outline of the missing building, with a small fountain at the point of impact of the aircraft.
Every year a commemoration of the victims takes place at "the tree that saw everything". During the ceremony there is no air traffic above the Bijlmer.
