Geocache Description:

Welcome to Melbourne, and to gmj3191's 100th geocache.

I was born in Melbourne, although spending most of  my 20s and 30s in Sydney due to my employment situation.

I've also spent time in all the other Australian capital cities, and in my opinion, when I consider all the important factors relating to quality of life for me, Melbourne is the number one place to live.

The listed coordinates will find you standing on the footpath on Princes Bridge, close to Flinders Street Station, a major train station and the historical heart of Melbourne. The bridge crosses the Yarra River and brings St Kilda road into the CBD to meet Flinders Street. From here you are well placed to begin a short journey through the city, or a longer journey to anywhere in Victoria.

The related web page above will give you some insight into what's going on in Melbourne, and Victoria.

If you wander along  towards the centre of the bridge there are some great views to see.

Upstream, you can see the Sporting Precinct, with magnificent venues for world class sporting fixtures. The highlights are the Melbourne Cricket Ground which dominates the skyline, Melbourne Park which houses the tennis courts used for the Australian Open, Olympic Park which hosts major athletic events, and AAMI Park which caters for Rugby League, Ruby Union and Soccer. The Punt Road oval and Goschs Paddock complete the precinct.

Downstream you have some bridges across the river, with the CBD on your right, with Southbank and the Crown Casino buildings on your left,  and further down although out of sight, the major shipping facilities and two large bridges across the Yarra facilitating traffic movement

Wandering further you complete your river crossing and find Hamer Hall, The Arts Centre and the National Gallery on the right or South Western side of St Kilda Road, and the left or South Eastern side leads you to a kilometre of gardens including the Alexandra Gardens, the Queen Victoria Gardens, the Kings Domain, the Shrine of Remembrance and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Logging the Cache

At GZ you will find a structure supporting two lights which bears a heraldic adornment similar to a coat of arms.

  • In order to claim a find, simply post a photo of the coat of` arms, showing the buildings on the south side of the river in the background, with your online log.

Optionally, if you're able to, please post a photo or two of what you see looking up and down the river from the centre of the bridge, or wherever you choose.

Logs not supported by the photo requested above may be deleted after a week or two.

Your photo must be posted in your Found log. Do not send it to me by email or message.

Congratulations to <Archie B1 & B2> on achieving First To Find.
