Geocache Description:

This geocache will lead you to a beautiful monastery located in southwest corner of Crete.

The monastery was built in 1894 on the place where the former one from 17th century once stood. Its name is derived from 90 steps which lead up to the 35 meters high rock where the monastery stands. Pursuant to the story, the steps used to be golden ("chryso" in Greek). Not long after Moni Chrysoskalitissa was built and dedicated to Dormition of Mother Mary and Agia Triada, it was dissolved in 1900 and re-established as a convent in 1940. After the Nazi occupation of Crete, several resistance fighters were given refuge here and this is why German soldiers came to live at the premises in 1943, after they chased the monks. When the Nazi forces left, the monks returned to the monastery.

In order to reach the cache, you need to find answers to the following questions. The information table which is located in front of the entrance to the monastery will help you.

1) How many bells are there in the bell tower of the monastery? = A

2) In which month is (in Greece) celebrated the Assumption of Virgin Mother? = B

3) In which year the monk Manassis Karagiannakis started the reconstruction and restoration of the monastery? = C

Final coordinates are as follows:

N 35° 18.(C - 1240 - B)

E 023° 32.0(2xA+B+1)
