In 1878, Grafton was no more than a collection of log cabins nestled in the timber in a bend of the Park River. From Sweden, the family credited with first settling what is now the city of Grafton, ND, was John and Gustav Coleson. When arriving in America, the two brothers were interviewed by an immigration officer, who assigned them different surnames - Coleson and Carlson. The lure of railroad work drew the brothers to work with the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR). When the railroad reached Emerson, Manitoba, the brothers struck out on foot and arrived at Joseph Brunell's cabin in Oakwood, ND. Moving further up the river, John and Gus staked claims to land in what would become Grafton. Gus built a cabin near the end of Summit Ave. This cache is hidden near where Gus constructed his cabin - the first in what would become Grafton, ND.
