Geocache Description:

Another cache in this lovely series, which remembers those who gave their lives in World War 1 and 2.


The cache is not at the listed co-ordinates, but you will find the war memorial there. To find GZ you will need to solve the simple puzzle.

 

Risby War Memorial commemorates the nine residents of the village who were killed or missing in World War 1. It also lists four men who never returned from World War 2.

 

The memorial is located on Risby Village5Green2and takes the form of a Latin Cross on an octagonal, three-stepped base. There is a chi-ro on the reverse of the cross and IHS on the front. The memorial is1made of Weldon stone reaching a height of 480cm,6width 92cm and a base depth 92cm.

 

It was unveiled by Lt. S P Eagle3on 9 April 1920 and the story featured in the Bury and5Norwich Post on 16 April 1920. It was built by Hanchets and6the architect was Thomas Dinham Atkinson.

 

There0are also First and Second World War Hopton0Wood Stone plaques within St. Giles Church. These feature the names of the0nine men from World War 1 and four men for World War 2 who are also on the village green memorial. The World War 1 plaque3was unveiled on 29 August 1920 and the World War 2 plaque7was dedicated by the Archdeacon of Sudbury 22 February 1948.

 

Within the church there is also an individual2plaque for World War 1 which features the0name of a man not named on the0main memorial.

 

The series is dedicated to those who fought for their country. "We will remember them!”
