Située en haut des fossés Saint-Julien, la place Saint-Martin, dénommée en souvenir d’une église détruite sous la Révolution, est ornée de cette statue équestre du connétable Bertrand Du Guesclin depuis 1921. Elle avait été réalisée par le sculpteur caennais Arthur Le Duc.
Promu connétable à son retour d’Espagne, Du Guesclin arrive à Caen en 1370. Après avoir vaincu une troupe anglaise, il s’installe au château de Caen où il demeure deux années.
Sur cette place, le marché aux bestiaux s’y tenait traditionnellement chaque lundi, mais surtout un marché aux peaux et aux suifs. Ce dernier fut déplacé vers les abattoirs en 1894. Le marché aux bestiaux, après avoir glissé vers les Fossés Saint-Julien a disparu, mais cette place s’anime toujours lors du marché Saint-Sauveur, chaque vendredi.

Placed at the top of ditches Saint-Julien, the place Saint-Martin, called in memory of a church destroyed under the Revolution, is decorated with this equestrian statue of the supreme commander Bertrand Du Guesclin since 1921. It had been realized by the sculptor caennais Arthur Le Duc.
Promoted supreme commander to his return of Spain, Du Guesclin arrives to Caen in 1370. Having overcome an English troop, he settles down in the castle of Caen where he lives two years.
On this place, the cattle market was traditionally held in it on every Monday, but especially a market in skins and in tallows. The latter was moved towards slaughterhouses in 1894. The cattle market, having slid towards ditches Saint-Julien disappeared, but this place always livens up during the market Saint-Sauveur, on every Friday.
