On the eve of the Great War Pula was an important military and strategic centre of tremendous importance for the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy as its principal naval port and its fleet anchorage; the city was therefore fortified with a complex system of manned fortification constructions (forts, batteries, artillery companies and machine gun positions) that extended from the east to the west coasts of Istria barring all accesses to the city. In addition to the city’s civilian population, a large number of soldiers and highly skilled professionals from all walks of life working for the navy and the naval arsenal lived in Pula, so the Austro-Hungarian authorities, immediately prior to the First World War and during the War, began with the construction of an underground tunnel system (trenches, galleries and passageways), with communication passageways under the city’s hills to shelter the city’s population and to serve as ammunition stores. Not a single hill of the inner city was spared from drilling and digging! A widely spread network of underground tunnel shelters was created, with two of the largest under the hills Kaštel and Monte Ghiro. The Venetian fort on the hill of Kaštel (Hafenkastell) served as a warehouse, barrack and observation post. In the fort’s underground there are rooms that were used as men’s quarters, as storage space for material and ammunition and as a prison for the captured enemy soldiers. There are two shelter tunnels under the Kaštel – the central city hill, one is directly underneath the fort located on top of the hill and the second one is at the foot of the hill (where you are right now). It connects two inner city areas and it is approximately 400 meters long. At the foot of the hill, under the Kaštel, four entrances with passageways positioned on different sides of the hill lead towards a central space in the middle, where the passageways interconnect. The entrances are so positioned to enable a constant air flow to the whole system and the temperature during the whole year varies from 14 to 18°C. These tunnels, with their 3 to 6 meters wide and approximately 2.5 meters tall passageways, could accommodate about 6000 persons.

Pulski podzemni tuneli – skloništa Pula je, kao glavna ratna luka i sidrište flote, pred početak Prvoga svjetskog rata važno vojno-strateško središte od iznimnoga općedržavnog značaja za tadašnju Austro-Ugarsku Monarhiju; stoga se utvrđuje široko zasnovan sustav fortifikacijskih objekata s posadom (utvrde, baterije, topničke bitnice i mitraljeski položaji), koji se protezao od zapadne do istočne obale Istre i tako zatvarao prilaze gradu. U samome gradu, uz civilno stanovništvo, boravi i veliki broj vojnika i stručnjaka različitih profila koji su radili za potrebe vojske i Arsenala, te su austrougarske vlasti, neposredno pred Prvi svjetski rat i tijekom njegova trajanja, za potrebe sklanjanja ljudi u slučaju direktnih zračnih napada na grad, započele izgradnju podzemnoga sustava tunela – skloništa (rovova, galerija i prolaza) sa spremištima streljiva i komunikacijskim hodnicima ispod pulskih brežuljaka. Nijedan pulski brežuljak u najužoj jezgri grada nije ostao pošteđen bušenja i kopanja! Stvorena je široko rasprostranjena mreža podzemnih tunela – skloništa, od kojih su najveća ona ispod brežuljka Monte Zaro, te podno Kaštela i Monte Ghira. Mletačka utvrda na Kaštelu (Hafenkastell) pod austrijskom je vlašću služila kao skladište, vojarna i promatračnica. Ispod utvrde nalaze se podzemne prostorije, koje su u Prvom svjetskom ratu služile za smještaj posade, materijala i streljiva, ali i kao zatvor za zarobljene neprijateljske vojnike. Ispod središnjega gradskog brežuljka – Kaštela nalaze se dva tunelska skloništa: jedan ispod same utvrde, koja se nalazi na vrhu brežuljka, a u njegovu podnožju drugi (u njemu se upravo nalazite), koji povezuje dva dijela užega centra grada, dužine oko 400 m. Četiri ulaza s različitih strana, pri dnu padine brežuljka na kojemu se nalazi Kaštel, vode podzemnim hodnicima prema jedinstvenom prostoru u središtu, u kojemu se hodnici susreću. Ulazi su napravljeni tako da omogućuju cijelom sustavu pravilno strujanje zraka, a temperatura zraka u svakom godišnjem dobu varira do 14 do 18°C. Ovaj je prostor, u kojemu su hodnici široki od 3 do 6 m, a visoki oko 2,5 m, mogao primiti oko 6000 ljudi.

Die Stadt wurde daher mit einem Befestigungskonstruktions System von bemannte Befestigungskonstruktionen (Forts, Batterien, Artilleriefirmen und Maschinengewehrpositionen) verstärkt, die sich von Osten bis zu den Westküsten von Istrien erstreckten und alle Zugänge zur Stadt sperrten. Neben der Zivilbevölkerung der Stadt lebten eine große Anzahl von Soldaten und hochqualifiziert Fachleuten aus allen Lebensbereichen, die für die Marine und das Marine-Arsenal Arbeiteten, in Pula, auch die österreichisch-ungarischen Behörden Das Bau eines unterirdischen Tunnelsystems (Gräben, Galerien und Durchgänge), mit Kommunikationswegen unter den Hügeln der Stadt, um die Bevölkerung der Stadt zu schützen und als Munitionslager zu dienen. Nicht ein einziger Hügel der Innenstadt wurde vom Bohren und Graben verschont! Es wurde ein weit verbreitetes Netz von unterirdischen Tunnelhäusern mit zwei der größten unter den Hügeln Kaštel und Monte Ghiro. Die venezianische Festung auf dem Hügel von Kaštel (Hafenkastell) diente als Lager, Kaserne und Beobachtungsposten. In der U-Bahn der Festung gibt es Räume, die als Herrenquartiere, als Stauraum für Material und Munition und als Gefängnis für die gefangenen feindlichen Soldaten. Es gibt zwei Schutztunnel unter dem Kaštel - dem Zentrum Stadthügel, einer unmittelbaren unterhalb der Festung auf dem Hügel und der zweite liegt am Fuße des Hügels. Es verbindet zwei Innenstadtgebiete und ist ca. 400 Meter lang Am Fuße des Hügels, unter dem Kaštel, führen vier Eingänge mit Durchgängen, die auf verschiedenen Seiten des Hügels liegen, zu einem Raum in der Mitte, wo die Durchgänge miteinander verbunden sind. Die Eingänge sind so positioniert, dass eine Konstante Luftströmung zum ganzen System ermöglicht wird und die Temperatur während des ganzen Jahres von 14 bis 18 ° C variiert. Dieser Tunnel, mit ihren 3 bis 6 Meter breiten und ca. 2,5 Meter hoch Durchgängen, damit könnten hier etwa 6000 Personen untergebracht werden.
