Located directly north of Wabamun is 312 acres of recreation area. With a trail circling the whole lake and a well-established rainbow trout fishery the lake is an ideal spot to spend the day.
East Pit Lake was created by TransAlta to replace two small lakes that were drained due to open-pit mining of the coal beds that lay beneath. Reclamation of the area started with the planting of native vegetation and grasses. Thousands of seedlings were planted and nesting boxes were created to encourage the return of native bird species.
