Cei Ballast or Ballast Island
Ships carrying slate for export from Porthmadog would return laden with ballast, which was dumped in a heap outside Porthmadog harbour forming Lewis's Island or Ballast Bank. The name Lewis came from the name of the man who lived on the island and operated the steam crane to unload ships.There was a quay, some 200m long, forming the western side of the island and a group of buildings adjacent. On the second edition of the 25in Ordnance Survey maps of 1900, three tramways are shown: one running along the quayside and two separate lines running from the quay to the north east of the island; they are not shown on the 1917 edition. The island consists of rocks and stones from various parts of the world.
Cei Ballast is one of 43 (unbridged) tidal islands which can be walked to from the mainland of Great Britain at low tide.
About the Event
Fancy dress is optional so dig out your pirate costumes, there will be a prize for the Best Dressed Pirate.
For anyone wishing to join us in negotiating the muddy channel, we will be assembling on the The Cob Embankment at 6.30pm and commencing our walk to the island at 6.45pm. Please take care in crossing the rail track and wear suitable footwear there is a lot of mud and a small stream to cross. Once on the island we will make camp and hoist the 'Jolly Rodger' to claim Cei Ballast for 9 Usual Suspects!
Cei Balast neu Ynys Balast
Roedd cychod a oedd yn mynd a llechi o Borthmadog i weddill y byd yn dychwelyd yn llawn balast, a oedd yn cael ei dadlwytho a'i adael mewn pentwr tu allan i harbwr Porthmadog gan greu Ynys Lewis neu fanc balast. Daw'r enw Lewis o ddyn a oedd yn byw ar yr ynys a oedd yn rhedeg y craen stêm i ddadlwytho cychod. Roedd yna gei, ryw 200m o led a chreodd ochr gorllewinol yr ynys a grŵp o adeiladau cyferbyn. Yn yr ail argraffiad o fap yr arolwg Ordnans 25 modfedd 1900, mae yn dangos tair tramffordd, un yn rhedeg ar hyd ochr y cei a dau arall yn rhedeg o'r Cei i Ogledd Ddwyrain yr ynys; nid ydynt ar argraffiad 1917. Mae'r ynys yn llawn cerrig o bob rhan o'r byd.
