In 1982, David H. Murdock purchased the mill and its surrounding property. He envisioned a redevelopment plan that would include a renewal of the downtown area. By 1984, a new YMCA and a revitalized downtown (now referred to as Cannon Village) were completed. The following year, a textile company out of Eden, North Carolina, purchased the company and all its Bath and Bedding division. The newer smoke stack of Plant One was repainted maroon, the first time the color had been changed since 1950, and the corporate name was added.
