Geocache Description:

Although Canada existed prior to 1867 in both the French and British empires, Canada Day - July 1st - is frequently referred to as “Canada’s birthday”.  This is simply the anniversary of only one important national milestone - the joining of the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Canada (containing only Ontario & Quebec at the time) - on the way to full independence for the country.  Canada became a kingdom within the British Empire on July 1st, 1867, named the Dominion of Canada.  This new confederation gained an increased level of self-governance, though the British parliament and Cabinet still maintained political control over certain areas, including foreign affairs, national defense, and constitutional changes.  Canada continued to gradually take control themselves until they became completely independent in 1982.

Canadians celebrate national independence in much the same manner as we do here next door, with typical outdoor events such as parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues, fireworks, musical concerts and citizenship ceremonies. As a cacher, you can also earn a new souvenir here!

So, let’s celebrate with and for our neighbors with an outdoor get-together!  Though I can’t guarantee fireworks at this time of day, I’m sure there will be some in the area after dark.  BBQ? You can find it on the local menu.  And there will be music, though it will take you to places a bit more tropical!

When: July 1st, 2017, 2:30pm - 3:30pm

Where: Beef ’n Buns ‘n Paradise - 1201 E. Patrick St., Frederick

O Canada!

Our home and native land!

True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free!

From far and wide, O Canada,

We stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land, glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee;

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!
