- Négociants en vin du Beaujolais ou Lyonnais, ou Vénitiens, tous venus de Beaujeu par le col des Echarmeaux,
- Voyageurs de retour des grandes foires de Champagne ou de Bruges la Belge par la Grande Voix Française de Paris à Lyon,
- Pèlerins poussés par l'abbaye de Cluny, en route pour Compostelle, vers le tombeau de l'apôtre Jacques.
Tous sont passés à Charlieu.
De ces temps prestigieux, dont l'apogée se situe au XIIIème siècle, des richesses développées dans ces échanges, de son terroir généreux, la ville et ses alentours gardent un ensemble d’édifices religieux et civils remarquables, bâtis dans la belle pierre ocre de Saint-Denis.
