Geocache Description:

All aboard the international cruise of flavors.......This crazy cruise ship has embarked upon a world tour, with curious and hungry cachers aboard. The itinerary is every country in the world, one restaurant at a time, all without leaving the confines of Central NJ. 60th Stop ... Italy!

Join the Central Jersey Cachers as we venture across the Mediterranean Sea to the land that gave us Ceasar, Pizza, Marco Polo, and Expresso.

We have been cruising the world for 5 years, 59 different countries, across oceans, seas, and mountains.

Celebrate this landmark occasion with us at:

Carmen's Trattoria

907 Oak Tree Ave

South Plainfield, NJ

June 13th

6:30pm to 9:30pm

It all began in July 2012. A group of cachers got together at a Mexican restaurant, marking our first excursion in a never ending vacation. Since then we have visited the pyramids of Egypt, the steppes of Russia, and the tundra of Canada. We have sampled the delights of Japan, India, and Thailand. The cruise ship was able to pull into the Himalayan ports of Mongolia, the beaches of Jamaica, and the festive streets of Hungary. Hundreds of passengers have checked in, and received a stamp in their passport for each culinary adventure.

The CJ Cruise director has been saving the venue of Italy to mark the special anniversary of 5 straight years of World Culinary Cruises.

How many of us have dreamed of casting aside everyday life and running off to a villa in Tuscany to soak up perfect sun-dappled views while the wine flows and the pasta bowl never seems to empty? Now is your chance to get away from the daily grind and relax with some pasta, pizza, and perhaps an second glass of wine.

Since ancient times, grains such as wheat have been a staple food throughout Italy. Indeed, wheat is one of the most revered foods in Italian cookery. It's used to make a variety of interesting breads including ciabatta, focaccia and crusty whole grain bread. Pasta, which is made from wheat and comes in dozens of different shapes, has also been a highly-prized food for centuries.

Italian cuisine is characterized by its simplicity, with many dishes having only four to eight ingredients. Italian cooks rely chiefly on the quality of the ingredients rather than on elaborate preparation. Ingredients and dishes vary by region. Many dishes that were once regional, have proliferated with variations throughout the country.

Italian cuisine has developed over the centuries. Although the country known as Italy did not unite until the 19th century, the cuisine can claim traceable roots as far back as the 4th century BCE. Food and culture was very important at that time as we can see from the cookbook (Apicius) which dates back to first century BC. Through the centuries, neighbouring regions, conquerors, high-profile chefs, political upheaval and the discovery of the New World have influenced its development. Italian food started to form after the fall of the Roman Empire, when different cities began to separate and form their own traditions. Many different types of bread and pasta were made, and there was a variation in cooking techniques and preparation. The country was split. For example, the north of Italy (Milan) is known for its risottos, the central/middle of the country (Bologna) is known for its tortellini and the south (Naples) is famous for its pizzas and spaghettis.

What has been accomplished at these cruise events? The idea for the first first MetroGathering was hatched in Jamaica. Several road trips have been planned and executed after meeting at a cruise. We have all made new friends, and we look forward to meeting new people with each new stop.
