La légende raconte que la forêt était ensorcelée et engloutissait les guerriers infidèles qui osaient s'aventurer dans ses profondeurs.
On prétend qu'elle faisait appel à la tourmentine : une créature ayant l'aspect d'une touffe d'herbe, qui lorsqu'un imprudent la foulait du pied, l'empêchait de marcher droit et l'emmenait à hue et à dia !
