Geocache Description:

This is a multi-cache starting at the lovely old Hisley Bridge in the Bovey Valley Woodlands. This is a packhorse bridge which spans the River Bovey, built between the seventeenth and mid-nineteenth centuries.

The bridge has very low parapets possibly to allow for the crooks and packsaddles that hung low on the horses that went over it, or it could have been built this way to construct it more cheaply. It was built with uncoursed rubble moorstone and has a single, slightly irregular arch. It has a span of 5.18 metres and a width of 2.13 metres between the parapets. On the west side of the bridge is a slotted gatepost, so at one time the bridge was probably gated with spars which fitted into the recesses. There are some rusty hinges on the gate post too, so later it must have been modernised to have a hanging gate. There is also a blocking stone, again on the western end of the bridge.

To obtain the coordinates for this cache you need to locate some information in the proximity of the bridge:

How many slots in the old granite gate post on the gate hook side would have held the spars? (A)

On the wooden signpost near the bridge what is the distance to 'everywhere'? (B/C)

There is a plaque on the nearby seat slightly downstream from the signpost, how many letters are in the person's forename? (D)

Using the above information the following equation will give you the needed coordinates to locate the cache:

N50 36.A(A-B)(B+C) W003 42.(A+B)(C-4)(D+1)

Check sum for your collected answers (A-D) - 19

The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast. There is a stats listing run by Bloodsock, so you can see how many Little Bridges you have found, you can find it here:- https://littlebridgesseries.wordpress.com/ . If you would like to add to the series, please contact Stan on stanthews@aol.com and he will give you a number for your bridge, to qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles, please make sure your title exactly matches “Little Bridges # xxxx then the name” including spaces so it will get picked up and added to stats list.
