Byggnaden du nu kommer att stå framför har en historia som sträcker sig mer än 200 år bakåt. Och allting började med en svamp den 18 augusti 1739.
Den svampen skänktes av Vetenskapsakademins medlem Jonas Alströmer, och blev starten på en naturaliesamling. En samling som tog fart markant 1748 efter att drottning Lovisa Ulrika skänkt ett ovanligt stort getingbro som hittats på Drottningholm.
Samlingarna utökades hela tiden och 1786 togs ett historiskt beslut. Nämligen att samlingarna skulle börjas visas för allmänheten. Sveriges första offentliga museum var i och med detta öppnat.
Lokalbehovet var ett ständigt bekymmer för Vetenskapsakademin. Och efter flera lokalbyten så bestämdes det i slutet av 1800-talet att en ny byggnad skulle uppföras ämnad enbart åt samlingarna.
Att hitta en lämplig plats var visst svårt. Men 1901 bestämdes det att lokalerna skulle byggas ute vid Frescati, och 15 år senare var allting klart.

The building you are going to stand in front of has a history spanning more than 200 years back. And it all started with an mushroom on August 18, 1739.
The mushroom was bestowed by the Academy of Sciences member Jonas Alströmer, and was the start of a collection natural objects. An collection which accelerated significantly in 1748 after Queen Lovisa Ulrika given an unusually large wasp nest that had been found at Drottningholm.
The collections were expanded constantly, and in 1786 where an historic decision made. Namely that the collections would begin be showed to the public. Sweden's first public museum was, with this opened.
The necessary space was of constant concern to the Sciences Academy. And after several local changes, it was decided in the late 1800s that a new building would be built destined exclusively to the collection.
Finding a suitable location was difficult. But in 1901 it was decided that the premises would be built out at Frescati, and 15 years later, everything was ready.
A lot of changes have taken place over the past 100 years. And right now the public collections are organized like this:
