Mayday on the Mountain Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Jabbywockyz: Sad to say that we are going to have to cancel this event. Turns out that Parks Canada no longer maintains the trail that goes past the crash site. We tried to hike it this past weekend and its all grown in and not safe. We are going to contact Parks about opening up the trail in the future. If that happens we will have this event again another time. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Geocache Description:

When: Saturday, August 12, 2017
Time: 1pm to 4pm
Where: South Escarpment Trail, Riding Mountain National Park

On April 30, 1944 during a World War II training mission 4 soldiers crashed their plane in Riding Mountain National Park.  We learned about this incredible historical story of strength and determination in our own backyard and want to share it with fellow geocachers. We plan on hiking out to the site of the plane wreckage.  The wreckage is scattered over an area of about 25 metres. A plaque sits on the ground to commemorate the event. Some of the aircraft was removed by the department of defence, and some by souvenir collectors. Any visitors are urged to leave the site as they find it so it can continue to tell its story of tragedy and the triumph of the human spirit.

The hike to the plane crash site is roughly a 7km round trip.  The difficulty level is moderatate.  Please plan accordingly.  We plan on leaving the trailhead at 1pm.

At 10am on the morning of the hike we plan on getting together at our house to watch the 30 minute documentary about the plane crash.  If anyone is interested in joining us let us know.  If anyone would like links to the video to watch on their own send us an email at jabbywockyz@gmail.com

A park pass is required to be in the park. Your in luck as they are free for 2017 so be sure to pick one up.
