La pierre du Val de Loire. 
Le tuffeau, présent dans toute la vallée de la Loire et de ses affluents va par sa couleur, son aspect doux et lumineux, donner son identité culturelle au Val de Loire. L'impact sur le paysage ont été des facteurs qui ont influé sur le classement du Val de Loire au Patrimoine Mondial.
ORIGINE GEOLOGIQUE DES TUFFEAUX...
APERCU DES EVENEMENTS GEOLOGIQUES QUI ONT MARQUE LA TOURAINE:
Notre région a subi de nombreuses péripéties au cours des temps géologiques. La Touraine repose sur un sol cristallin et hercynien....(-400 à -245 millions d’années.) Entre -245 et -65 millions d’années la Touraine a subi de nombreuses transgressions et régressions marines. C’est pendant ces périodes de submersion que des sédiments importants se sont déposés. Lorsque la Loire a creusé son lit elle a entaillé ces roches. De part et d’autres du lit nous observons des formations de la fin de cette longue période que les géologues dénomment : Crétacé supérieur.
A Langeais, sur la rive droite de la Loire on observe des variétés de calcaires crayeux aux caractéristiques lithologiques et paléontologiques particulières qui datent du Turonien et du Sénonien (-90 à -60 millions d’années.) On donne à ces formations le nom général de TUFFEAU
(représenté en vert clair et vert foncé sur la carte ci-dessous). 
Le Tuffeau blanc du Turonien moyen...
C’est un calcaire tendre, sableux, micacé et de couleur gris verdâtre à blanchâtre. Cette craie micacée est pauvre en fossiles. On y rencontre de rares ammonites, fossiles stratigraphiques courants qui disparaîtront brusquement à la fin du Crétacé, quelques inocérames (genre de bivalves marins) et dans les couches supérieures des oursins et des brachiopodes.
Le Tuffeau jaune du Turonien supérieur.
Au cours de la formation de cette roche on accuse une diminution de la profondeur de la mer. Le sédiment calcaire qui se dépose se charge en sable quartzeux. Ce tuffeau est de couleur jaunâtre, grossier et poreux. Notons pour mémoire que c’est pendant cette période que les faluns de Touraine vont se former. On peut observer ce faciès à la limite de Langeais et de Saint Michel sur Loire à la faveur d’une faille appelée par les géologues « faille de Pont Boutard ».

The tuffeau, present throughout the Loire Valley and its tributaries, is characterized by its color, its soft and luminous appearance, giving its Cultural identity in the Loire Valley. Its impact on the landscape have been factors that have influenced the classification of the Loire Valley to the World Heritage.
GEOLOGICAL ORIGIN OF TUFFEAUX ...
OVERVIEW OF GEOLOGICAL EVENTS WHICH HAVE MARKED THE TOURAINE:
Our region has undergone numerous adventures during geological times. The Touraine rests on a crystalline and Hercynian soil .... (- 400 to -245 million years.). Between -245 and -65 million years the Touraine has undergone numerous transgressions and marine regressions. It was during these periods of submersion that significant sediments were deposited. When the Loire dug its bed, it cut these rocks. On both sides of the bed we observe formations of the end of this long period that the geologists call: Upper Cretaceous.
In Langeais, on the right bank of the Loire, there are varieties of chalky limestones with particular lithological and paleontological characteristics which date from the Turonian and the Senonian (-90 to -60 million years). These formations are given the general name Of TUFFEAU
(Shown in light green and dark green on the map below).
The White Turquoise Tuff ...
It is a soft, sandy, micaceous limestone with a greenish-gray to whitish gray color.This micaceous chalk is poor in fossils. There are rare ammonites, common stratigraphic fossils that will suddenly disappear at the end of the Cretaceous, some inoceras (a kind of marine bivalves) and in the upper layers of sea urchins and brachiopods.
The Upper Turonian Yellow Tuff.
During the formation of this rock, a decrease in the depth of the sea is observed. The calcareous sediment which deposits is charged in Quartz sand.The tufa is yellowish, coarse, and porous. It should be remembered that it was during this period that the Faluns of Touraine were to form. One can observe this facies at the limit of Langeais and Saint Michel on Loire thanks to a fault called by the geologists "fault Pont Boutard".
