Cache is on a remote Island only accessible by boat or at low tide on foot across a very rocky, very treacherous causeway, called "the Rocks" which is a Registered NC Landmark.
The cache is located on Zeke's Island off the coast of Fort Fisher. Zeke's Island is Part of the NC National Estuarine Research Reserve, and has extensive marshes and tidal flats. Be on the lookout for coastal birds, and sea turtles.
To plan for this trip I would suggest the following:;
1) Plan to access the island by Kayak or boat. There are local rental companies that can arrange this for you. Previously it was suggested that you could cross "the rocks" by starting out an hour before low tide, but the number of reported injuries on the rocks suggests that is it more difficult to cross now than it was when this cache was originally placed. If you attempt to cross the rocks you do so at your own hazard - be fully aware of the danger of wet moss which is slicker than ice, and razor sharp mussels and oysters. This combo has let to numerous deep gashes, hospital visits, and rescue calls.
2) Drive to Federal Point at the end of Fort Fisher, passing the ferry entrance. Park at the raised Battery at the end of the Island.
3) While you are here you might want to find the Forte Fisher Cache, which is located very near the parking area.
4) Paddle across the shallow water at the end of the point to Zeke's Island. Again, do not attempt to cross the rocks as you risk serious injury to yourself and your companions in so doing.
5)Once across the causeway, walk the NE side of the beach. About 300 yds down, you'll see a small foot path between two cedar trees. Follow the path past a large rotting log, through an old campsite, past a solitary cedar. Follow your GPS and begin looking up. The cache is up high but is easily lowered.
If you are on foot, after finding the cache, MAKE SURE YOU GET BACK ON THE CAUSEWAY BEFORE HIGH TIDE. The Causeway will be nearly impossible to walk on as the tide rises. SERIOUS INJURY CAN RESULT FROM POOR PLANNING! KAYAK INSTEAD!
On the way out - enjoy the Fort Fisher Museum, and the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher. It makes for a great day!
UPDATE!!!!!
07/12-09 : The old cache has been replaced with a new container and a new logbook. The Logbooks have all been double bagged in ziplocks - please be sure to reseal them and tighten the lid to prevent water damage. The cache has also been relocated to a higher resting place at nearly the exact same coordinates. It should be obvious how to retrieve it.

07/31/14 New Cache (not a box or jar this time) has been located in a different place but not too far from the original location. Don't bring anything big to leave behind - probably for the best considering how rare it was for an item to be moved once it was left there anyway.
