Geocache Description:

An easy cache with a historical flavor.

Near this cache is the former home of Deacon Moses Cheney (1793-1875), an ardent abolitionist who resided in the western half of the double home diagonally across the street from the cache. The house served as a station on the Underground Railroad. Fugitive slaves would spend the night here before moving along to the next stop, in Hancock, a few miles north of here. Frederick Douglass is known to have stayed here when he was invited to Peterborough to speak about the cause of emancipation.

Please no nighttime caching, as it is in a residential area.

It is recommended that you park at the parking coordinates, cross at the crosswalk and walk on the sidewalk a couple of hundred feet back to the cache. The Cheney house is now a private residence. The cache is across the street to respect the homeowner's privacy, but you can get a good view of it from the sidewalk just west of the cache. The cache is wheelchair friendly, as long as you use the recommended crosswalk.
