Geocache Description:

In the spring of 1909 Entwistle was incorporated and named after a Grand Trunk Pacific Railway employee - James Entwistle. James knew the railway construction would be halted on the east banks of the Pembina River for a few years as the bridge was built over the river so he staked claim on a section of land where Entwistle is today. In the next years, the Village of Entwistle boomed growing to have many stores, a hotel, six restaurants and a meat market. However, this boom didn’t last too long.

Once known as the “toughest town in the Canadian Northwestern Frontier”, having gambling joints, moonshine stills and open sale of moonshine (which was illegal), Entwistle was altered in 1910 once the bridge construction was complete. The construction gangs then moved west along with the gamblers, prostitutes, and some of the moonshiners and other businesses leave Entwistle not as vibrant as it once was.

Today it is a quaint little community most recently popularized by a local tube ride down the river and two lovely campgrounds both north and south of the hamlet. It is near the halfway point between Edmonton and Edson making it a great stopping point on the way to the mountains!

This geocache was part of the Parkland County GeoTour – Series 1 which has now ended.
