Geocache Description:

This is the first cache that I've hidden and hopefully it's nice and easy!  The cache is not placed on the village sign itself, so please do not walk on the gardens.

VS #1132 Wivenhoe

Wivenhoe is a civil parish in north eastern Essex which developed as a port for Colchester.  The town, home to around 8,000 residents, was historically Wivenhoe Village (the port) and Wivenhoe Cross (to the north on higher ground).  The two were separated by fields but merged in the early 19th century.

The village sign stands close to the area now known as the cross.  It features a ship - a nod to the ship building industry which thrived here until aroud the 1960's; and a wyvern - a mythical creature with a reptilian body, two legs, tail, and a dragon's head and wings.  Many believe that Wivenhoe got its name from this beast and its promontory (hoe), but apparently it is Saxon in origin and, whilst the "hoe" is correct, the "Wiven" derives from the name "Wifa".  Personally, I prefer the wyvern tale!

For more information on Wivenhoe's history, visit www.wivenhoeheritage.blogspot.co.uk or "Wivenhoe Memories" on FaceBook.

If anybody would like to expand this series please do. I would just ask that you let Smokeypugs know first so they can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.

This is a high muggle area, so stealth is required.  You're looking for a magnetic nano with a log only, so please bring a pen.  This cache is placed with permission from Wivenhoe Council.
