En 2007 commence l’histoire de cette cathédrale, lorsque le patriarche orthodoxe de Moscou vient à Paris rencontrer Nicolas Sarkozy pour que soit édifiée une église russe à Paris. L’ambassadeur de la Russie en France poursuit les négociations. En 2010, Météo France, qui occupait des bureaux au tout début du quai Branly, déménage pour Saint-Mandé, et la Russie acquiert le terrain pour quelque 70 millions d’euros. Un appel d’offre mobilise des architectes du monde entier, et en mars 2011, un architecte espagnol d'origine russe remporte l’adhésion du jury. Son projet rencontre de vives oppositions, du maire de Paris d’alors, Bertrand Delanoe, et des architectes des bâtiments de France. En 2013, la demande de permis de construire est retiré, et c’est l’architecte arrivé deuxième au concours de 2011 qui reprend le projet. Jean-Michel Wilmotte, chargé par ailleurs de l’aménagement du grand Moscou, est français, passionné par la culture orthodoxe. Il aménage sur 4 650 mètres carrés, en quatre bâtiments, un centre culturel comprenant une librairie, une salle d’exposition et un café, un centre paroissial avec un auditorium, des bureaux, des appartements, une école primaire franco-russe et, enfin, la fameuse cathédrale de 450 mètres carrés aux cinq dômes recouverts de feuilles d’or.

The history of this cathedral begins in 2007 when the orthodox patriarch from Moscow comes to Paris to meet Nicolas Sarkozy so that a Russian church will be built in Paris. His successor follows up on the negotiations. In 2010, Meteo France, which had its offices at the very beginning of the Branly quai, moves to Saint-Mande, and Russia acquires the land for about 70 million euros. The ensuing competition to build the new church attracts architects from all over the world and, in March of 2011, an architect from Spain with Russian roots, wins the project. His proposal is met with stiff opposition, from the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, and from the architects of building in France. In 2013, the permits to build are retracted and the architect who came in second in the competition in 2011, takes over the project. Jean-Michel Wilmotte, now charged with the project, is French and impassioned by the Russian orthodox culture. He develops four buildings in the space of 4,650 square meters: a cultural center encompassing a book store; an exhibition hall and café; a parish with an auditorium, offices, apartments and a French-Russian primary school; and, lastly, the famous 450 square meter cathedral with its five domes covered in gold.
