Carvel was officially named in 1911 after a romantic novel, Richard Carvel written by Winston Churchill. The once thriving hamlet had several businesses including a store and post office, a blacksmith shop, and a successful restaurant that also accommodated lodging.
While you’re here, take time to visit the Carvel General Store. This place boasts much of the hamlet’s history! After being built in 1914 on its original plot, the store was moved across the road when the new railway station was built. The store ran here for about 1 year before it burnt down. The current building was re-built in 1918 – it’s going to be 100 years old next year!
