Baytown Town Square is a result of the City of Baytown's ongoing renovations to Texas Avenue, and is one of the oldest streets in Baytown. Goose Creek, one of the three towns that later consolidated to become Baytown, was founded right where Town Square is located. It used to be full of bustling store fronts. Many of these businesses were Jewish owned which is evident by the domed architecture inside the old Wilkenfield's Furniture Store and a historic Synagogue nearby.
Back in the day, the Texan Theater (currently partly occupied by Como en Mexico) along with the Brunson Theater were the places to be on Friday and Saturday nights. Other shops included Altman's Men's Store, T.C. Culpepper's, and Guberman's. These places sold everything from house-hold goods, to a nicely tailored suit!
If you are visiting on a hot day, check out the interior of Sabor of Mexico to see part of the old Texan Theater. You can cool down with some homemade ice cream or popsicles! Once you cool down be sure to check out the shops located along Texas Avenue. The Baytown Art Gallery features local wares handmade by artists. And new to the Downtown Arts District is the mural art and Umbrella Alley!
