La serpentinite est une roche tendre, facile à rayer, de couleur verte, brune ou noire. La serpentinite peut avoir un toucher doux qui rappelle celui du talc ou de la pierre à savon. Les variétés noires ont généralement une bonne susceptibilité magnétique.
La carrière de l'Orgerais, carrière de petite taile (environ 30 m sur 20 m) est caractérisée par la présence à l'affleurement de serpentinites parcourues pas des fentes de tension remplies d'amiante.
