Join us for the Maryland Geocaching Society’s fifteenth annual Summer Picnic at the Carderock Recreation Area of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park! Everyone who has an interest in geocaching is invited to come and join in the fun. You need not be a member of the MGS to attend. Whether you have 10 or 10,000 finds, this event is for you! New to the game? New to the area? Visiting from out of town? Please drop in and introduce yourself – we’d love to meet you!

Carderock Picnic Pavilion
Carderock Picnic Pavilion

Carderock Recreation Area is located just south of the Great Falls of the Potomac and Mather Gorge. These stunning features provide an excellent example of local geology while demonstrating the sheer force and power of nature. The most popular activity for Carderock Pavilion attendees is hiking the three sections of the Billy Goat Trail, one of the most popular and challenging rock hikes in the eastern US. There are also many woodland trails for beginners and experts alike. Fishing is a popular pastime in both the C&O Canal and the Potomac River. (Be sure to acquire a Maryland fishing license for those age 16 or older.) There is a softball field, an area for volleyball or relay games, and horseshoe pits near the front of the pavilion. All are available for use during the event.
