Geocache Description:

The Errinundra Shining Gum (Eucalyptus denticulata) is a unique tree that was only describe as a new species in 1991. It is likely that it will soon be split from the Shining Gums in the Snowy River National Park, due to a slight variation of dentation on the leaf margins. Government politics is blocking this from occurring I believe.

You have probably marvelled at these trees along the walk. Some are absolutely huge and could be over 400 years old. They only grow in areas of high moisture in East Gippsland above 1000m asl. They make for amazing photographs in fog and ferns. They have no value as a wood product. The timber is too soft. In the early parts of this century, local residents tired of watching single tree loads on log trucks started trying to do some research as to where these amazing trees where going. They could find no records of any Shining Gums that where being graded into quality and thus royalties payed for the cut product. Freedom of information showed that these trees where going straight to the chip mill and the areas where being replanted with the more commercially valuable species of trees like Eucalypus Delagatensis (Alpine Ash) and E. nitens (Another shining gum species), which also hybridises with the Errinundra shining gum, further threatening the future survival of this rare tree.
