West Row lies on the north bank of the River Lark, 2 miles west of the town of Mildenhall, and just south of the large airbase RAF Mildenhall.
The Mildenhall Treasure, a major hoard of highly decorated Roman silver tableware from the fourth-century AD, was discovered in West Row. The hoard was discovered by farmer Gordon Butcher while ploughing in January 1942.
The Silver is depicted on the village sign, along with reference to the farming community and local RAF base
In 1946 children's author Roald Dahl wrote a non-fiction account of the discovery of the Roman silverware. The British author, shortly before he became a fighter pilot in the RAF, visited RAF Mildenhall as well as RAF Lakenheath. In a note before the story, Dahl explains how he read in the newspaper about a remarkable find of Roman silver. Very interested, a few days later he drove to Mildenhall to interview the ploughman involved.

If anybody would like to expand this series please do. I would just ask that you let Smokeypugs know first so they can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
