Church Micro 10553...Orford Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Blue Square Thing: Unfortunately a new fence has been put in place, destroying the rather perfect hiding place for this cache. Quite why the perfectly fine concrete posts were replaced by wood that will rot I don't know, but it's happened.

I took a look around for an alternative hiding spot, but there really isn't one that is bit enough to conceal the sort of cache I want this to be, so I've made the decision to archive the listing. My apologies to the last four searchers - it really was a lovely spot for a cache. Fortunately there are still many reasons for visiting Orford, including doughnuts and Eccles cakes.

Thanks to the 249 people who found the cache in the four and a bit years it was here.

Geocache Description:

A small container hidden just outside the churchyard of Orford's parish church.

The Church:
Orford is always worth a visit. St Bartholomew's has a ruined 12th century chapel (which is one of the clues in the excellent Orford Trail multi cache) and is the standard, massive East Anglian church itself. Much of it has been restored over the last 150 years with the tower only having been returned to its true height in the early 1970s.

The ruins at the east end include a chancel built at about the same time as Orford Castle (another of the clues to that multi cache is there) and the inside is, apparently, very beautiful indeed and features a medieval font, brass figures and paintings if you like such things. It was also where four of Benjamin Britten's works were premiered, including Noye's Fludde.

Something for everyone then? Certainly if you combine it with a wander through the town and take the chance to either find or reacquaint yourself with some of the local geocaches (Awful Mess from way back in 2006 was my first find). There are plenty of places for a sit down too, although it could be busy, especially on summer weekends. Or take a trip over to Orford Ness (a National Trust property - limited opening) to see the remains of a century's worth of military activity and lots and lots of shingle.

The cache:
To find the cache walk through the churchyard from the church itself - the way is clear enough, although you might want to walk around the northern wall. Lots of gravestones for those who like them, and there are two memorial stones and a bench where the footpath leaves the churchyard which may be of particular interest.

The cache is a little way down the footpath (you could also come from the lane to the east of course). You're looking for a true small sized container (i.e. bigger than a film container!). Take some care around the gardens - the hint will give away the hiding spot so if you're in any doubt (and as someone who uses hints a lot) you should use it. You may want to take it back to that bench to sign the log and consider that there are more serious users of latitude and longitude than those who play our little game.
