This cache is part of my Historical/Education series. By 1917 many ships carried a MARCONI WIRELESS including the Titanic which had two of Marconi's employees aboard to operate the wireless. However, most merchant ships of the day could not afford a second wireless operator and thus traveled with just one aboard. On Titanic's maiden voyage there was a merchant ship also traveling to New York just an hour away from the Titanic. During the day when radio men were not busy with ship traffic they often chatted with each other to pass the time. Thus was the case with the merchant ship and the Titanic. At 10 PM the operator aboard the merchant ship sent his final message of the day to the Titanic. He said it has been a long 16 hour day for me so I am going to retire for the night and will see you in the morning. One hour later the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank seven hours later. The next morning when the merchant ships operator awoke and turned on his rig he learned of the sinking. His ship immediately headed for the last reported location and rescued the 700 survivors aboard the Titanic.

Once Marconi had constructed dozens of his towers along the east coast to aid in ship communications he turned his interest to the railroads where he hoped to install his invention on trains. He selected the Lackawanna Railroad in the Scranton PA area for his first test on a line between Scranton and Binghamton. In 1913 he moved to Binghamton and took up residence in the Arlington Hotel across the street from the Binghamton station. Here he supervised the construction of TWO of his towers. This is the only surviving Marconi Tower in existence today. In 1914 a train left Scranton headed for Binghamton with Marconi wireless aboard. For the entire duration of the trip the train was in constant communication with both the Scranton and Binghamton stations.
