C’est le premier village limitrophe avec les Hautes-Pyrénées, traversé par la Petite Baïse. Avant la Révolution, le village s’appelait Ponsan-Dessus. Les communes de Ponsan-Père et Ponsan-Soubiran ont fusionné par Edit Royal en 1821. Ponsan et Soubiran sont des noms d’origine gallo-romaine : « Pontianum » pour le domaine de Pontius et « Supranum » pour le domaine de Suprus.
Des sarcophages paléo-chrétiens ont été retrouvés autour de l’ancienne église qui abritait une chapellenie fondée en 1604 par Jeanne Brunet, épouse de Jean de Vignes, seigneur de Ponsan. La chapelle seigneuriale devenue aujourd’hui église paroissiale, reste le lieu avec le château tout proche. L’extérieur de l’église est remarquable, des arcatures cintrées bordent la toiture, le chevet semi-circulaire est encadré par deux absidioles.
Sur la parking vous trouverez indiqué; un sentier de randonnée qui vous permettra d'aller jusqu'au point culminant du département.
