I was genuinely surprised when I realised that there was no geocache on Batam, an Indonesian island about an hour's ferry ride from Singapore. Batam is an easy weekend getaway for SIngaporeans, so I took the liberty to plant a simple cache and start the ball rolling.
Waterfront City was one of those abandoned mega projects from the Suharto era, but as long as you keep your expectations in check, there are still cheap food and great entertainment to be found in the vicinity. The rows of shophouses fronting the shoreline serve beer and food, and they are a stone's throw away from the Waterfront ferry terminal, which welcomes twice daily ferry trips from Singapore. Nearby accomodation includes the high-quality and affordable Holiday Inn and Harris Resort. For leisure activities, one gets to choose among cable skiing, go karting and fishing.
Cache is a simple hide by the shophouses close to the shoreline, BYOP!
