Geocache Description:

Brooklyn Heights was the epicenter of the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War, so it's appropriate that the area has it's own modern day version for travel bugs.  Right around the corner from this cache is Plymouth Church, where Henry Ward Beecher led the movement to abolish slavery and the church was known as the Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad.  Visit his statue nearby in front of the courthouses near the intersection of Cadman Plaza West and Johnson Place.  In addition to the underground railroad, the church has a piece of Plymouth Rock.  Perhaps the most humbling thing about the church is the inscription over the fireplace in the library that notes that the building was a gift to the congregation in recognition of Henry Ward Beecher's efforts to save the Union.

As you walk around the neighborhood, you'll see many brownstones from the mid-1800's.  Many of these have remnants of the Underground Railroad in their basements. Have Funlaugh!

We got the underground railroad started by dropping a travel bug in. Get it started on his journey around the world.
