KFP #05 – Where’s the View? Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Halywid Hunters: A long overdue visit today to our nine cache sites in Kilbroney Forest Park. I went with the decision already made that I was going to archive them.

With more than a two-hour round road trip from home and a couple of hours required on the ground, some of which is steep, it’s a challenge doing maintenance here!

In the event, only #7 and #9 were missing. All the rest were still in situ and waiting to be found, though it now turns out #3 was on a cycle track. This one was placed after #2 and the site approached from the south; at that time there was (and still is) no signage in place to highlight that the path was (is) a cyclist-only track.

So, it’ time to let go of this cache along with the other 8 in the series! The 7 in-situ containers were removed today. Thanks to all who visited these caches. We hope they gave you enjoyment.

Now there is plenty of room for other cachers to place some new ones in this lovely area, we await further developments!

Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of caches hidden in Kilbroney Forest Park ; an area with spectacular scenic views of mountains, streams, valleys and the sea.

Well this is a view after a fashion!

Well this is a view after a fashion!

The park has a wide range of facilities and services, including tennis courts, a children’s play area, playing fields, an arboretum, barbeque and picnic areas, a café, specialised mountain bike facilities, and a caravan park and camp site.

A scenic drive (open daily) provides access to the Upper Car Park (see Waypoints below), which is the recommended starting point for access to THIS and all the OTHER caches in the Kilbroney Forest Park – KFP Series.

Finding these caches in one go involves a loop walk of approximately 3¾ miles (6 km). Allowing time to enjoy the views along the way, it will probably take the best part of 2½ to 3 hours to complete. Add ¾ mile (1.2 km) and another 30 minutes or so if you plan to include the two caches on Slieve Martin before returning to the car park.

There are three waymarked walking trails in the forest, which vary in length from two kilometres to seven kilometres, and take the visitor to places where they can enjoy magnificent views and the beauty of the surrounding woodlands. And, for anyone coming here, a visit to The Cloughmore Stone – a short walk from the Upper Car Park – is a must!

Fiddlers’ Green is a small clearing at the southern edge of the Oakwood, which was once a focal point for local entertainment. Rostrevor’s annual festival of traditional music derives its name from this historical site.

PLEASE NOTE that there may be restrictions from time to time on access to parts of the forest to facilitate forest operations. When this occurs, you should adhere strictly to any safety signage that is posted.

THE CACHE is a camouflaged tube, which may take a minute or two to spot.

It ONLY contains a log roll, so please remember to bring your own pen or pencil to record your FIND. ’No Sign, No Find!’ is the rule here; otherwise your log will be deleted.

Please be sure to REPLACE THE CACHE EXACTLY AS FOUND. Thanks.

Enjoy the walk and enjoy the FIND!
