Hjálparfoss is a beautiful two-stepped waterfall near the confluence of the rivers Thjorsa and Fossa in the Thjorsa Valley. The surrounding area is called Hjálp (Help), because the travellers across the Sprengisandur route found great help in reaching a vegetated area to graze their horses after a long journey in the barren interior. As elsewhere in the valley, the signs of the eruptions of Mt. Hekla are very prominent by the waterfall.
The cache is slightly further downstream of the waterfall, at the base of a cliff which shows a very interesting pattern of twisted basalt columns. On the opposite side of the river you can see some great rock formations, too. Also look in the river where you might see some big fish.
Please write small in the logbook and don't use large stickers and stamps. You do not need to leave the path. This cache is being looked after by a friend when we are not in Iceland.
