Geocache Description:

The Galloping Goose trail has a tremendously interesting history to tell and you are encouraged to research it.

The trail is actually an old Rio Grand Southern railroad bed which traces through the San Juan range from Ridgway to Durango in Colorado.   This particular part of the trail is an easy hike for all ages and is one of our favorites, with the only restriction being the time of year and weather.  DO NOT TRY TO NAVIGATE THIS PARTICULAR TRAIL BEFORE LATE JUNE OR EARLY JULY.  The reason being you must cross a small stream which can be literally a raging torrent from the winter snow melt and subsequent runoff.  The stream is much too dangerous at that time of year!  But later is very easy to cross.

Travel to the trail head is an easy ride for any vehicle with parking for up to 8 vehicles.  Elevation at the cache site is ~8700 feet.

The trail-head/parking area is located at N 37.88684 W 107.91081. I have recently discovered an error in the TOPO map (last updated in 1953) which I used for this particular cache location. The trail-head/parking area location described above is an actual and accurate GPS location but the pictorial location on the map is off by about 1/3 mile.

The container is sturdy plastic with a waterproof snap-on lid and presently contains some trinkets and goodies plus a pen and note book for your signature
